چکیده

Benzaldehydes are components of atmospheric aerosol that poorly represented in current vapour pressure predictive techniques. In this study the solid state (PSsat) and sub-cooled liquid saturation pressures (PLsat) were measured over a range temperatures (298–328 K) for chemically diverse group benzaldehydes. The selected benzaldehydes allowed effects varied geometric isomers functionalities on (Psat) to be probed. PSsat was using Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry (KEMS) PLsat obtained via correction utilising experimental enthalpy fusion melting point values differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). strength hydrogen bond (H-bond) most important factor determining when H-bond present polarisability compound not present. Solid state and sub-cooled liquid vapour pressures of substituted dicarboxylic acids using Knudsen Effusion Mass Spectrometry (KEMS) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry

Solid state vapour pressures of a selection of atmospherically important substituted dicarboxylic acids have been measured using Knudsen Effusion Mass Spectrometry (KEMS) over a range of 20 K (298–318 K). Enthalpies of fusion and melting points obtained using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) were used to obtain sub-cooled liquid vapour pressures. They have been compared to estimation met...

Vapor pressures and thermodynamics of oxygen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons measured using Knudsen effusion.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their oxygenated derivatives (OPAHs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants resulting from the incomplete combustion of coal and fossil fuels. Their vapor pressures are key thermodynamic data essential for modeling fate and transport within the environment. The present study involved nine PAHs containing oxygen heteroatoms, including aldehyde, carbox...

Knudsen Effusion Mass Spectrometry: Technique for Obtaining Useful Thermodynamic Information and for Studying Interesting Vaporization Chemistry

Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry (KEMS) is a very powerful technique for studying the vaporization thermodynamics of inorganic systems at high temperatures. Although primarily one examines the vapor phase, information about condensed phases are also obtained through careful measurements and analysis of the results in accordance with the phase rule. In this paper, we have shown the capability ...

Atomistics of vapour–liquid–solid nanowire growth

Vapour-liquid-solid route and its variants are routinely used for scalable synthesis of semiconducting nanowires, yet the fundamental growth processes remain unknown. Here we employ atomic-scale computations based on model potentials to study the stability and growth of gold-catalysed silicon nanowires. Equilibrium studies uncover segregation at the solid-like surface of the catalyst particle, ...

Investigation of New Intermetallic Bonds and Molecules by Knudsen Effusion Mass Spectrometry Integrated with ab Initio Calculations

The recent work of the authors' group in the field of KEMS studies of intermetallic gaseous molecules is reviewed. Examples are given of systems such as intragroup 14 diatomic molecules, -triand tetratomic species in the SiSn systems, and diatomic species containing Group 11 elements. Special attention is given to species containing heavy metals, where relativistic effects can play an important...
